Installing rooftop solar is a long-term investment, and choosing the right system size is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. A system that’s too small won’t deliver the savings you expect; an oversized one increases your upfront investment without a proportional payoff.

If your monthly electricity bill is around ₹3,000, a 3 kW rooftop solar system could reduce it to just ₹200–₹300, helping you save up to 90% on your electricity bills. Eligible homeowners can receive up to ₹78,000 in government subsidy under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, reducing the overall cost of installing rooftop solar.  Freyr Energy’s Solar Calculator gives you a personalized estimate in under a minute based on your monthly electricity bill and property type.

Calculate your solar requirement now and understand your investment before scheduling a professional site survey.

How Much Solar Do You Need?

Your exact requirement depends on consumption, location, roof conditions, and usage pattern – but here’s a typical range:

Monthly Electricity BillPossible Solar Requirement
₹1,500 – ₹2,500/month
₹3,000 – ₹5,000/month
₹6,000 – ₹8,000/month
₹10,000+/month
Worked example — a ₹3,000/month bill (≈300 units):
StepEstimate
Recommended system size
3 kW
Estimated installation cost
₹1,99,138 (excl. subsidy & GST)
Government subsidy
₹78,000 (max slab for 3 kW+)
Freyr Energy discount
₹22,000
Effective investment (after subsidy + discount)
₹99,138 (+ taxes and net-metering extra)
Estimated annual savings
₹30,240
Annual energy generation
4,320 units

Note: These are approximate values. Your solar power calculator result will reflect your actual bill and site conditions.

Government Subsidy Guidelines (PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana)

Residential rooftop solar installations are eligible for a central subsidy under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, credited via Direct Benefit Transfer to your bank account 30–45 days after your DISCOM commissions the installation:

System SizeSubsidy Amount
1 kW
₹30,000
2 kW
₹60,000
3 kW or above
₹78,000

A few important details

  • This subsidy applies to residential properties only. Commercial solar installations are not covered under PM Surya Ghar — commercial customers can still use this calculator to estimate system size, cost, and generation, but the "Government Subsidy" figure will not apply to them.
  • The subsidy covers panels and inverters only, not battery storage.
  • Some states offer additional top-ups on top of the central subsidy (special category/hill states qualify for higher caps; a few states add their own top-up schemes).
  • Equipment must be on the MNRE's ALMM-approved list for the subsidy claim to clear.
  • The solar calculator applies the correct slab automatically based on your recommended system size and property type.

Factors That Affect Your Final Solar Requirement

A solar calculator provides a reliable starting estimate, but your final solar system recommendation is confirmed after a professional site survey. Several factors can influence the final system size, cost, and expected energy generation.

Solar Panel Technology

Different solar panel technologies have varying efficiency levels, which can affect the number of panels required and the rooftop space needed.

Roof Direction and Shading

A rooftop with maximum sunlight exposure and minimal shading generally produces better solar energy generation. Roof orientation and nearby trees or buildings can also impact system performance.

Available Roof Space

The usable rooftop area determines how many solar panels can be installed and whether the recommended system size can be accommodated.

Electricity Consumption Pattern

Homes and businesses with higher daytime electricity usage typically achieve better savings, as more of the solar energy generated is consumed directly rather than exported to the grid.

Location and Weather Conditions

Solar energy generation varies based on your location, sunlight availability, and seasonal weather conditions.

Local Electricity Regulations

Local DISCOM regulations, net metering policies, and approval timelines may influence the installation process and overall project cost.

Your monthly electricity bill is the easiest way to estimate your average electricity consumption. Based on this, the calculator recommends a solar system that can generate enough electricity to offset your usage, helping estimate installation cost, savings, and applicable subsidy.

A solar calculator provides an estimated solar requirement based on your electricity bill and the information you provide. The final system size and pricing are confirmed after a free professional site survey.

Yes. Freyr Energy’s calculator provides an estimated project cost based on your electricity consumption, recommended system size, and applicable PM Surya Ghar subsidy.

Yes, for residential properties. The calculator automatically applies the current PM Surya Ghar subsidy slabs (up to ₹78,000) based on your recommended system size. Commercial properties are not eligible under this scheme, so the subsidy field won’t apply to commercial estimates.

Typically, a 1 kW rooftop solar system requires approximately 80–100 square feet of shadow-free roof area. The exact requirement depends on panel technology and installation design.

Yes. Commercial properties can use the calculator to estimate solar capacity, installation cost, generation, and potential savings – though the government subsidy shown applies to residential installations only.

No. It’s an initial estimate. Final pricing and system design are confirmed after a detailed, free site survey.

Most residential systems pay back their effective investment within roughly 3–4 years through electricity bill savings, after which the system continues generating largely free electricity for the remainder of its typical 20–25 year lifespan.
