India is turning into another clean energy era, and rooftop solar is being increased at a pace never seen before. It is this change that has occurred at Freyr Energy. In the last ten years, our company has experienced tremendous growth from a small and determined team to one of the top residential rooftop solar providers in India. According to a recent interview that BusinessLine conducted with our Co-Founder & Managing Director, Mr. Saurabh Marda, he has a very eloquent point to offer: During the first 10 years, we had installed approximately 12,000 rooftop solar systems. However, in 2025-26 alone, we will have over 15000 systems installed- more than we had in a decade. Our target of 30,000 installations in 2026-27 will also come to fruition. This indicates the speed with which rooftop solar is a household and micro-business necessity in India.
This rapid momentum is also reflected in our financial growth. We made 165 crore in revenues last year, and 300 crore is the target we are aiming to hit this year. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is also among the leading causes of this increase, as lakhs of families have been motivated to switch to rooftop solar with high subsidies and easily available financing schemes.
We have never been confused about our target at Freyr Energy, where we are targeting residential clients and micro-enterprises. It is also among the rapidly expanding segments, with the increasing number of individuals seeking long-term coverage against increasing electricity costs.
Rooftop Solar in India Is Gaining Strength Like Never Before.
What is happening in our development is a much larger change taking place on a national level. By October 2024, the rooftop solar capacity of India was 22.5 GW, or almost 17 percent of the total solar capacity of 130 GW. This is an improvement in an industry that has been lagging for years.
Why is solar adoption booming?
Increased government subsidies.
Falling solar panel prices
Better customer awareness.
Increased demand to have effective and cheap power.
New technologies, automation and remote monitoring.
Rooftop solar is no longer a niche solution — it is rapidly becoming a popular choice for Indian families and small enterprises.
Temperatures are rising — and so is electricity demand.
Every year, India is becoming increasingly hotter. Indeed, 2024 has been among the hottest years on record, with the temperatures being 0.65 o C above the long-term average. The increase in the amount of electricity consumed (fans, coolers, air conditioning, etc.) has grown significantly due to the hot weather. In the summer of 2024, the power demand in India exceeded 250 GW, which is the highest in history. The increased demand translates to increased electricity costs to the families unless they shift to alternative sources of energy. This is where solar on rooftops becomes very important. Solar energy can eliminate grid dependency, shield families against rising power prices and the environment will be cleaner.
A sustainable future is within reach.
The expansion of Freyr Energy belongs to the bigger process of India transitioning to decentralised, sustainable, and affordable energy. Rooftop solar will become one of the largest energy transitions of this decade, with its governmental support and increasing awareness.
Our mission continues as we expand:
To enable solar adoption to be easy, dependable and affordable to all homes and micro-enterprises. We feel that all people should have access to clean energy – and we are dedicated to providing solutions that would assist our customers in saving money, having energy independence, and creating a better tomorrow.
